Notes
a. Note:   Joseph Butters HALL moved west to homestead with his family, and settled in the Portage-la-Prairie (Burnside) district of Manitoba about 1873. On the 1881 Census, there is Joseph HALL, English, age 56, living in Marquette District of Manitoba, [Burnside Area 1]. This is the correct District for Portage-la-Prairie at that time. The listing of the names and ages of the spouse and children in 1881 confirms that this indeed is the same family. There is also an Isaac Hall, English, age 59, in the same District, [Burnside Area 2]. This man is one year younger than John Grantham Hall. It is remotely possible that he could be a sibling for whom there is no IGI birth record.
In 1891 at Burnside, son Thomas is living adjacent to Joseph, and right beside Thomas is John L. Hall, age 25. The information on his parentage [father born in England, mother born in Ontario], and religion [Methodist], would lead one to believe that he is of this family. John's 18 year old brother, Charles, is living with him at that time. Where were they on the 1881 Census? I do believe John L. and Charles to be the nephews of Joseph Butters Hall, they could possibly be the sons of Isaac ~1822 or of Charles Hall ~1833 to whom I have ascribed them. This must be followed up on.

HALL, Joseph Butters, 47, b: England, Wes-Meth, English, Farmer + Sarah Ann, 33, b: Ont., W-M, English, children: Charlotte Jane, 15, Ont., Thomas James, 14, Elizabeth Maria, 13, William Henry, 12, Rebecca Leah, 8, Samuel Cornelius, 4, Sarah Amelia, 2, plus Leah, 77, b: England, W-M, English. No sign of Matilda Ann, 11, as a stray in any household in Oro Division, I suspect she may have been visiting with relatives in either Medonte or Tiny Twp. Charles Peter, who would be 6, is already deceased.
There's much information about how the family lived. They had 98 acres, on which were situated one house and two barns/sheds. Vehicles included three cars/wagons/sleds. Agricultural equipment included two ploughs/cultivators and one fanning mill. They had no carriage or sleigh.
The land included 75 improved acres, of which there was 30 acres pasture, a half-acre orchard or garden, 10 acres of wheat, half an acre of potatoes, and twelve acres for hay crop. From this land, they reaped: 100 bushels of spring wheat, 500 bu. oats, 40 bu. peas, 180 bu. potatoes, 2 bu. apples, 100 lbs of maple sugar, 12 tons of hay. Livestock included: two horses over three years old, one colt or filly, four milch cows and four other horned cattle, 18 sheep, eight swine. Produce included: five sheep and six swine killed or sold for slaughter, 300 lbs butter, 100 lbs wool, 120 yards homemade cloth or flannel, 30 cords of firewood.
