Scotstarvit Tower is an L-shaped, 5 storey building built between 1550 and 1579. In 1611, it was acquired by Sr. John Scott - scholar, author, geographer and map Maker- whose book "The Staggering State of Scot's Statesmen" accused many well-known Scottish politicians of fraud and trickery." From the WWW Rotary Club of Cupar, Scotland.
Sir John Scott bought the estate from Alexander Inglis, and Sir Scott is thought responsible for the work above the double-corbelled parapet executed in 1627, i.e. the crowstepped caphouse and lucarned spire over stair. The kitchen must have been relegated to an outhouse. From a copy of a book regarding Ceres, from Johanna Roche, page 93.
The plaque on Scotstarvit Tower "This tower is an outstanding example of the typical type of dwelling built by the landed gentry in Scotland between the 14th and 17th centuries. Constructed between 1550 and 1579 Scotstarvit, like other tower-houses, was built to give adequate protection to the owner and his family and could be stoutly defended in the event of an attack. Domestic comfort was however, not forgotten as is evident by the provision of a hall, parlour and bedroom in the upper storeys. Ancillary buildings, including the kitchen and stables, were built independent of the main tower within an enclosed courtyard. Known as the Barmkin, of which no traces now remain."
Book - Hesselgrave Families, page 92 states that John Lonie came to Madrid, St. Lawrence Co. NY about 1832, (Alien Reports Book 1). He applied for citizenship in Sept. 1838, as a farmer of Madrid, age 41. John was naturalized on 15 Apr. 1845. Noted as son of Catharine and John Lonie in Hesselgrave book. A John LONE (sic?) is in 1840 Brasher St. Lawrence Co. NY Census, P.320. A Edward Loney in Brasher, page 321.
