Note: Sara was almost 6 feet tall. She refused to speak Yiddish, and until WWI, she and her husband pretended they were German (which was pretty common then - German Jews had been in the US since the early 1870's and had already been enjoying prosperity while speaking English fluently. It was very common for new immigrants to throw off their Yiddish and pretend to be German so they too could succeed. When WWI began, they dropped the German story and said they were Hungarian (even though Abe was Russian). Sara had a reputation as an exceptionally kind person, a great baker, and a hard worker. At the end of her work day at Irving Sarnoff Hats, she used to take home ties to sew as piece-work. Ultimately, after losing both breasts she died of cancer.
