Note: Was awarded Distinguished Service Cross in WWII for saving the airplane and crew of his bomber after being shot down by the Germans. He was the bombadier, and his hands were horribly burned in the attack. Pilot was killed, copilot unconscious and radioman. He pulled pilot out of the seat, flew the plane back and safely landed it.
Was also an early communist.
