Notes
a. Note:   Solomon Leavy was born as Solomon Levy in Gibraltar, and was part of his family's very successful cigar making business.
In 1887, the tobacco became outlawed for Arabs, putting the cigar business in an immediate depression. Marco (Mordechai) Guanish of Tangier and Gibraltar started a fund to relocate young Jewish men between the ages of 18 and 22 to either Caracas Venezuela or Philadelphia so they could work. In 1894, he paid $80 to relocate 22 year old Solomon to Philadelphia, to work in the penny cigar making business at that time. Ellis Island changed his name spelling.
Since the Spanish were not exactly popular in the U.S. at the time Sol met his wife Sarah, he concealed his lineage from his wife and claimed to be from London, and of Russian descent.
He worked in South Philly and was a member of Mikvah Israel, the Spanish-Portuguese Synagogue.
After a short time, they moved to Telford, where he made a sparse living as a tailor until 1925 when he returned to cigars, and South Philly.
The depression made it nearly impossible for a 60 year old man to make a living, and he died at Misericordia Hospital in Philadelphia after suffering a heart attack in the Imperial House (West Philadelphia) Movie Theater during a matinee.
His family never knew of his Sephardic or Gibraltarian origins during his lifetime.
