Note: John Hillman, Jr. moved around quite a bit. Sometime in the early 1850's the family left Pennsylvania and moved to Dubuque Co., Iowa. Before the 1860 Census they were living in Johnson Co., Nebraska. Shortly after the 1860 census the family moved to Gage County. John served in 1st. Regiment, Company C, Nebraska Cavalry during the Civil War. In 1866 he was discharged at Omaha and returned to Gage County where he homesteaded a farm in the section north of his parents' farm. In 1876 John, Sarah and family moved to Montague County, Texas. In 1879 they moved to Burnet County, Texas. In 1883 they moved Tom Green County, Texas. In 1886 they moved to Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory. (His post office address was Wynnewood.) John Hillman, Jr. and later his widow, Sarah Margaret (Mathews) Hillman filed a number of Claims and Affidavits with the U. S. Government in their effort to secure and maintain a Civil War veteran's pension. August 11, 1890 - Declaration For Invalid Pension State of Indian Territory, County of Chickasaw Nation. On this 11th day of August A.D. 1890, personally appeared before me, a U.S. Commissioner of the County and State aforesaid John Hillman, Jr. aged 47 years, a resident of Wynnewood, County of Chickasaw Nation, State of Indian Territory being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical John Hillman, Jr. who enlisted on the 13th day of June 1861, in Co. C, 1st Regt. Neb. Cav. Vol., in the war of the Rebellion, and served at least 90 days and was honorably discharged on the 1st day of July 1866; that he is unable to earn a support by reason of the following disability: disease of eyes, piles & scurvy. Said disabilities are not due to his vicious habits, and are, as he believes, permanent. Have you ever applied for a pension? Yes sir. If so give No. 679.305. If you are a pensioner state how much you draw and give number of Certificate ...... He makes this declaration for a pension under Act of June 27, 1890. He hereby appoints P. H. Fitzgerald, of Indianapolis, Ind., his true and lawful attorney to prosecute this claim. His P.O. Address is Wynnewood. September 22, 1890 - Affidavit Personally appeared John Hillman, Jr. of Wynnewood P.O., County of Chickasaw Nation, State of Indian Territory, who, being duly sworn upon his oath declares as follows: That since his discharge from the service of the United States at Omaha Nebraska in 1866 that he has resided at Gage County, State of Nebraska until 1876, and then moved to Montague County, State of Texas, and lived there until 1879 then moved to Burnet County, State of Texas and lived there until 1883, then moved to Tom Green County, State of Texas and lived there until 1886, then moved to Chickasaw Nation, Territory of Indians where he now resides. That his post office address is Wynnewood, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory: That Doctors McClelland, Seymour and Larsh, who were attending over him during the service, are to the best information and belief of affiant, now dead. That he does not know the whereabouts of his medical attendants who treated affiant up to 1886, although has tried to find them. January 20, 1891 - Affidavit Personally appeared John Hillman, Jr. of Wynnewood P. O., County of Pontotoc, State of Indian Territory, who, being duly sworn upon his oath declares as follows: That while in service he was treated for disabilities by Surgeons Wm McClelland and N. B. Larsh ast. Surgeon. That the first named Wm McClelland he knows to be dead, and that in answer to a letter written to N. B. Larsh, ast. Surgeon, he (Hillman) received from Mrs. N. B. Larsh a reply stating that her husband, N. B. Larsh, was dead. For these reasons he is unable to give Surgeons certificates in relation to diseases or treatment of same while in sevice. May 9, 1891- Affidavit Personally appeared John Hillman of Wynnewood P.O., County of Pontotoc, State of Indian Territory, who, being duly sworn upon his oath declares as follows: He is a pensioner under act June 27, 1890 in ?? 5582. He has a claim of 9315 pending under the general pension law which he wishes to complete at the earliest practicable date with P. H. Fitzgerald as his attorney. May 23, 1891- Affidavit Personally appeared J. A. Taylor and G. D. Kyser of Wynnewood P. O., County of Pontotoc, State of Indian Territory, who being duly sworn upon their oath declare as follows: That they are well acquainted with John Hillman, Jr. and know that he is disabled by Cataract, Rheumatism and Neuralgia. That said disabilities are permanent and not due to any bad or vicious habits and are such as prevent his performance of manual labor about two-thirds of his time and they further say that their knowledge of the above facts is obtained from the following sources, viz: a personal acquaintance with the claimant and that they have no interest or concern in this matter. February 27, 1897 - U. S. Pension Agency, Topeka, Kansas I hereby report that the name of John Hillman, Jr. ACT JUNE 27, 1890, who was a pensioner on the rolls of this Agency under Certificate No. 558.211, and who was last paid at $8.00 to 4 November, 1896, has been dropped because of his death Pt I1 Nebr Vol Cav. Died 20 January 1897, place of death not given. November 17, 1897 - Department of the Interior, Bureau of Pensions Respectfully referred to the Chief of the Record and Pension Office, War Department: requesting any additional military and medical history of the soldier if any on file. Wid. Orig No. 650.940, Name John Hillman, Jr. Co. C, 1st reg't. Neb. Cav. November 19, 1897 - Record and Pension Office, War Department Respectfully returned to the Commissioner of Pensions with the information that in the case of John Hillman, Jr., Co. C, 1 Neb Cav the military record in addition to former report show that this organization was also known as 1 Neb Infantry to Oct 31, 1863. No medical record found. January 17, 1898 - Application for Accrued Pension (Widows) Territory of Oklahoma, County of Pottawatomie: On this 17th day of January, 1898, personally appeared Sarah M. Hillman, who being duly sworn, declares that she is the lawful widow of John Hillman, Jr., deceased; that he died on the 25th day of January, 1897; that he had been granted a pension by Certificate No. 558.211 which is herewith returned (or if not, state why not); that he had been paid the pension by the Pension Agent at Topeka Kansas up to the 4th day of November, 1896, after which date he had not been employed or paid in the Army, Navy, or Marine service of the United States, except ......; that she was married to the said John Hillman, Jr. on the 22 day of August, 1867, at William Mathews, Gage Co., in the State of Nebraska; that her name before said marriage was Sarah M. Mathews; that she had not been previously married; that her husband had not been previously married; that she hereby makes application for the pension which had accrued on aforesaid certificate to the date of death; and that her resicence is No. ....Street, City of Tecumseh, County of Pottawatomie, Territory of Oklahoma, and her post-office address is Tecumseh. Witnesses at the death of John Hillman, Jr. were Mary Ann Mathews, Henry B. Furbee and Parlie Hillman all of Tecumseh. (Mary Ann Mathews maybe a daughter, Parlie Hillman is a daughter - tld) July 10, 1899 - Affidavit In claim app. No. 650.940 of Sarah M. Hillman widow of John Hillman, Jr. of Co. C of the 1 Regt. of Neb. Cav. Vols., Personally appeared before the undersigned duly authorized to administer oaths within and for said County, John W. Kaiser, aged 53 years, whose P.O. is Pella, County of Lancaster, State of Nebraska who being duly sworn, states in relation to said claim as follows to-wit: I was personally acquainted with John Hillman, Jr. for 26 years also his wife Sarah M. Hillman for the same length of time. I lived neighbor to them & know that neither of them was married before & that they were never divorced & that she has remained the widow of John Hillman, Jr. since his death to the present time. September 9, 1901- Affidavit Personally appeared Sarah M. Hillman, aged 56 years of Tecumseh P.O., County of Pottawatomie, Territory of Oklahoma, who, being duly sworn upon her oath declares as follows: That she is the lawful widow of John Hillman, Jr., late a member of Co. C. 1st Neb. Cav. And is a pensioner of the U.S. at $8.00 per month under the Act of June 27, 1890 by Certificate No. 488497. That her late husband was a pensioner under the Act June 27th, 1890 by Certificate No. 558211: That her claim for widow's pension under the general law has recently been rejected which does her a very great injustice as she is positive that the cause of her late husband's death was due to his army service. It is her desire to secure a re-opening & a further and more careful consideration of her claim for widow's pension under the general law. She therefore respectfully asks & requests for a further & more careful consideration of both of said claims & that Fitzgerald & Delp of Indianapolis, Indiana may be recognized as her true and lawful attorneys. In the further & final prosecution of said claims, and upon allowance of the same they be paid their fee. She respectfully asks & requests for prompt & early action on said claims. December 21, 1903 - Affidavit Territory of Oklahoma, County of Pottawatomie: In claim No. 558.211 of John Hillman of Co. C of the 1 Regt. of Neb. Cav. Vols., Personally appeared before the undersigned duly authorized to administer oaths within and for said County, James S. Bailer aged 39 years, whose P.O. is Brown, County of Pottawatomie, Territory of Oklahoma, who is being duly sworn, states in relation to said claim as follows to-wit: I was acquainted with John Hillman, Jr. during his lifetime. That the said John Hillman, Jr. died in January 1896. That he knows that said Hillman was afflicted with sore eyes and that said ailment entirely incapacitated him from manual labor and the blindness was total; that he could not see at all for about one year; after treatment for about six weeks he recovered his eyesight partially but could never see as well as before his blindness. And affiant further states that he has no interest in this claim. May 7, 1925 - Drop Report Pensioner: Sarah M. Hillman, Certificate No. 488.497, Address RR 2, Box 75, Boley Oklahoma Finance Division: The name of the above-described pensioner who was last paid at the rate of $30.00 per month to Mar 4, 1925 has this day been dropped from the roll because of death, March 17, 1925.
