Note: Will of Philip Stephens
In the name of God Amen
I Philip Stephens Sr. of the county of Roane and State of Tennessee being in doatage and infirm in body knowing the uncertainty of life and the certainty of death and in my right mind do wish at my decease, that my property may be disposed of in the following manner to wit:
I will and bequeath to all my wife's children one dollar a piece. William Burnett one dollar, John Burnett one dollar, Fanny Bates one dollar, Polly Garrison one dollar, Winny Renfro one dollar, George Stephens one dollar, Sally Clark one dollar, Elizabeth McNab one dollar, Nancy McNabe one dollar, Thomas Stephens one dollar, Philip Stephens one dollar, all the balance of my property I will and bequeath to my wife Mary Stephens to wit, three head of horses, ten head of cattle, fourteen head of hogs, six head of sheep, four beds and furniture and every other article in my possession, with fourteen dollars 12 cts money lent to Thomas Stephens, twelve dollars and 50 cts lent to George Stephens, ten dollars lent to William Burnett, all this and everything else that belongs to me, for her use while she lives for her to live on, which property she may dispose of in anyway she may think proper for the purpose of her support but in no other way, said property for her particular use as long as she lives, and at her decease, the said property or the benefits deriving therefrom to be equally divided among all her children above mentioned in this will their heirs or assigns.
I also wish that Charles Taliafono and Richard H. Taliafono to be the executors of the above will. In testimony of the same I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 6th day of August 1829 in the presence of us John Selvide Conrand Ault. Philip Stephens (his mark) Seal
