Note:   Apparently there was some sort of disaster in the late 1850's, so that by the census of 1861 the family had disappeared except for Isabella, William Alexr & Alexander who were taken to Tasmania in 1860 by a Bethune uncle. Bethune can be Beaton & in the 1851 census the following were visitors at William's house: Margaret Bethune age 21, Alexander Bethune age 20, & George Sutherland age 29, an Inverness ship's master. William Alexander's memoirs say his father had been an officer in the Sutherland Highlanders.
