a. Note:   Laura Octavia was the 8th & the only one of her siblings to be born in Tasmania. She was born above her father's premises in Elizabeth Street in a building 2 doors from Collins Street on the East side. She was to recall how she watched whalers fighting in Elizabeth St. She was educated at Miss Lansdell's school for young ladies at 14 Liverpool Street Hobart. Outgoing, an accomplished pianist, she was liked by everyone. Charles courted Laura between prospecting trips in the North, & on file there are letters he wrote to her from various camp sites. Sadly Charles never found what he was looking for, & clearly dissipated much of the fortune he brought with him to Tasmania. Eventually, after some bad investments Laura & Charles went back to his family in England. Moving to a branch of the Howroyd chemical works in Chicago it was there that their first child. Reginald was born.
