a. Note:   Alexander Beaton Sutherland was born in Inverness, Scotland in 1846 fifth of six children born to William Sutherland & Janet Beaton (Scots for Bethune). By 1860 or thereabouts it seems only Alexander & his elder siblings William & Isabella had survived. There were family stories that they were brought to Tasmania about 1860 by their Bethune kin. There is some support for that in an account of William's life story written by his daughter, but mention of the ship & ship's captain that was said had brought the family to Tasmania cannot be confirmed as yet. It is said Isabella went to teach in Sydney. Alexander became with his brother in law Samuel Gunton, among the most respected wheelwrights & builders of carriages & farm machinery in the Evandale district.
