Notes
a. Note:   HEDLEY AUGUSTUS SUTHERLAND, notes by R.B.Howroyd 6/93
Hedley Sutherland was born at Evandale in 1874 the second of five children. His father was Alexander Beaton Sutherland who was born in Inverness in 1848 & arrived here in 1860. Hedley's mother was Catherine (Kate) Gunton, born near Evandale in 1850. Alexander & his family moved to Ellesmere, as Scottsdale was then called, & he became the second wheelwright to begin work in the new community. Alexander died from consumption when Hedley was six years old & as the eldest son Hedley was to become the principal support of his mother, & later of his widowed sister & her family. Hedley's grandsons remember him as thoughtful & kindly with a quirky sense of humour & for many hours of walking behind him in the bush. He had a countryman's love of shooting & fishing & he would relax listening to Caruso on his treasured His Masters Voice gramophone. Through a series of newspaper advertisements we know that he was in business in 'Main', later King, Street cottsdale before 1909. He was a tall fair man, a tailor of the old school, & I remember how he worked perched cross legged upon his cutting table. Hedley died in 1949 & on page 2 of the April 22 issue the North Eastern Advertiser printed a long tribute to him. A precis follows. "There was a large & representative attendance at Mr Sutherland's funeral at the Ellesmere Cemetery on Tuesday afternoon. In the morning there was a requiem mass conducted by Father Flynn & Father Fitzgerald who also conducted the graveside service in the afternoon. A burial oration was read by Bro Robt. Murphy of the Druids Lodge. Chief mourners were Donald Sutherland, Syd Sutherland, & E.R.Howroyd & the pall bearers were W.Armstrong, W.Gunton, R.Gunton, & E.Howroyd. Among the floral tributes were wreaths from the Hospital Board, Druids Lodge, J.P's., & the Musical & Elocutionary Committee. Mr Sutherland died suddenly at his residence on Alfred St. on Sunday. He had been working at his tailoring establishment until a few days ago. He was well known throughout the North East. A man of high integrity he was highly esteemed & deservedly popular. He leaves two daughters, Claudia & Beatrice, & one son Donald. He took a great interest in sport, & was associated with the Central Tennis Club & the Scottsdale Athletic Club. He was a J.P., a member of the Licensing Court, the Hospital Board, & the Druids Lodge. He had been scheduled to sit in the Justices Court this week where tribute was paid to him for his work in the community & his memory."
