Note: He might have a sister named Martha Kitchens born in Jasper Co. GA in 1801. Much of the following data on this page was supplied by Brenda Rayman. 1820, October 17 - Jasper Co., GA. Southern Recorder (published in Milledgeville) Tuesday October 17, 1820: "Fortunate drawers in the Land Lottery Including the names of all who drew prizes from the 7th to the 12th of September, contained in pamphlet Sheet No. 2 Jasper County . . . . . . Benj Kitchen". Georgia Newspaper Clippings Jasper County Extracts, Volume I 1812-1835 by Tad Evans, Savannah, GA, 1999. Page 77. 1820, December - Monticello, Jasper Co., GA. Census, page 250. There is a B. Kitchens listed with one male under 10, 1 male 16-24, and 1 female 16-26. This would fit Benjamin and Delphia and their son Lewis. 1826, June 27 - Jasper Co., GA. Georgia Journal (published in Milledgeville): Tuesday June 27, 1826 ". . . will be sold in the town of Monticello, Jasper County, on the first Tuesday in August next . . .252 acres of land . . . in the 18th district of Jasper County, whereupon John Bludworth now lives. Levied on as the property of BLUDWORTH, to satisfy a fi fa in favor of Benjamin Kitching . . ." Georgia Newspaper Clippings Jasper County Extracts, Volume I 1812-1835 by Tad Evans, Savannah, GA, 1999. Page 169 1830 - Henry Co., GA. Census, page 241. 1 Male 5-10 (James "Mick"), 1 male 10-15 (Lewis D.), 1 male 20-30 (Benjamin), 1 female (probably Elvina Jame), 2 females 5-10 (probably Nancy C. and Rachel), 1 female (Delphia). Infomation from Brenda Rayman. 1840 - Cass Co. (now Bartow Co.), GA. Federal Census. There are two Benjamins listed: pages 112 and 114. Both could possibly fit this Benjamin as the number of children in both is right. Per Brenda Rayman, she thinks that the Benjamin on page 114 provides a better "fit". Note: there was another Benjamin Kitchens that shows up in Attalia Co. MS page 7 and one of these Benjamins in Cass Co could be the one in Attalia. One other possibility is that both Benjamins are the same person. It's possible he moved during the census and was counted twice. The 1850 census indicates that Benjamin Kitchens was a farmer and his real estate was valued at $1,000. He may have had a mill in Tishomingo Co. From Brenda Rayman (blrayman@earthlink.net): Probate Records for the Estate of Benjamin Kitchens indicate that he died April 1857 (Tishomingo County, MS). He owned 400 acres at that time. From Melissa Kitchens(gmkitch@dixie-net.com): "The property was in present day Prentiss County, just east of Jumpertown and just north of Highway 4 (and south east of the Columbia Gulf Transmission line for those of you familiar with the area). Dry Run Creek is just west of the property but does not touch it anywhere." PROBATE O (1851-1859) December Term 1857 Pages 216-217: ". . . said Benjamine Kitchens deceased ____ seized and possessed ____ the North West quarter of Section No 29 in Township No 4 of Range No 6 and the South West quarter of Section No 20 Township No 4 and Range No 6 aforesaid Also that he in his lifetime purchased from Joseph W Mathews the North West quarter of said Section No 20 in Township No 4 of Range No 6 aforesaid for the sum of two hundred and fifty dollars of which was paid in cash and the balance in one two and three ___ in installments of fifty dollars each with interest ___ ___ ____ that all of said purchase money has been paid except said last installment that said JW Mathews executed and delivered to said Benjamine Kitchens his written agreement and bond conditioned for the payment of said purchase Making of a good and sufficient title to said land when said purchase money should be paid It further appears to the Court that Delphia Kitchens the widow of said decedent is entitled to dower out of all of said lands and all of which are situate in this County and for the allotment of which a decree has been made at the present term of the Court . . ." Probate Records for the Estate of Benjamin Kitchens indicate that he died April 1857 (Tishomingo County, MS). He owned 400 acres at that time. The records also state that Nancy C. Kitchens (daughter of Benjamin) was the first wife of John J. Harrell. After Nancy's death, John J. Harrell married her sister, Rachel Kitchens. The children of Nancy C. Kitchens and John J. Harrell named in the Probate Records are: Theodocia A. Harrell Lamira Harrell Rachel Harrell *Jackson Harrell Nancy Catherine Harrell *Jackson Harrell may have died before June 1861 since his name is no longer listed in the Probate Records for June Term 1861.
