a. Note:   Mary had six kids by Arthur Grissom. As far as I can find she did not marry him. The families that I have talked to shy away from this fact. Life without a husband after the Civil War must have been unbelievably hard. Mary Elizabeth Wheelous (Hailey) lived with Jubal according to Ruth Queen. Ruth is Mellon Foy Wheelers daughter. The 1910 census shows Mary living with her son Joseph. Glenn Wheeler said Mary was kept in a pit or root cellar type of pit away from the house. She had lost her mind in her later years and family could not stand her in the house. We may know this as dementia. I have a one report that a Gaston Perry may be the father of some of the kids that we think were fathered by Arthur Grissom. It is reported that Mary ran down the church aisle to stop Arthur from marrying, she stopped the wedding.
