Notes
a. Note:   Joseph B. Wallen grew up on the farm of his father, William J. "Big Sandy" Wallen near Kyles Ford, Tennessee. When the Civil War began, Joseph B. Wallen was forced to join the Confederate Army, even though East Tennessee favored the Union. He was placed in the 43rd Tennessee Mounted Infantry and taken to defend Vicksburg, Mississippi. After the fall of Vicksburg, the captured Confederates were paroled and Joseph B. Wallen returned to Kyles Ford.
On October 1, 1863, Joseph B. Wallen enlisted in the Union Army at Camp Nelson, Kentucky. He was in Company L, 8th Tennessee Volunteer Calvary and achieved the rank of Sergeant on February 6, 1864. On September 11, 1865, Joseph B. Wallen was discharged from the Union Army.
Shortly after his War service, Joseph B. Wallen experienced the call to preach the Gospel. He became an Elder in the Primitive Baptist Church and traveled great distances on foot and on horseback to minister to all his churches. He was frequently away from home for days at a time.
Joseph B. Wallen was a charter member of the Freemasons at Blackwater, Virginia. He was buried with Masonic honors.
