a. Note:   Elijah was born in Green County, Georgia to Edmund and Patience Prettyman Knowles. He served in the War of 1812 in Georgia. In 1813 Elijah moved to Gibson County, Indiana. He was the only member of Edmund's family to move to Gibson County. He traveled to Indiana with Joshua Wilson who had first went to Indiana with the James Knowles family and returned to Georgia in 1813 on business.
  On January 25, 1815 Elijah married Margaret Woods in Gibson County, Indiana. Their children were : James b. December 1815; Betsy A. b.1817; Nancy b. 1819; William D. b. 1821; Edmund b. 1824; Joseph H. b. 1827; John Henry 1829; Sarah J. b. 1832 Elijah Smith b. 1834; Julia A. b. 1837. In 1837 the family moved to Logan County, Illinois. On December 11, 1839 Margaret Woods died. She was buried in the Jolly Cemetery, Oran Township, Section 4, Logan County, Illinois, adjacent to land owned by Elijah. Tombstone reads, " Margaret Knowles, wife of E. Knowles, September 11, 1839, 42 years.
  In 1840 Elijah moved to Menard County, Illinois and on October 8, 1840 Elijah married Elizabeth Hedges in DeWitt County, Illinois. Their children were: Mary Ann b. 1841; Lucinda b. 1843; Dulsena b. 1844, and Andrew Jackson b. 1845. Elijah was listed on the 1850 Menard County census. Around 1856 Elijah and Elizabeth moved to McLennan County, Texas. They settled in Perry, Texas and are listed on the tax rolls for 1857, 1858, 1864 and 1866. Elijah and Elizabeth left Texas and moved north to Bulter County, Missouri. Elijah died on September 13, 1867 in Popular Bluff, Missouri. His place of burial has not been found.
