Joined the 1st AIF ( Australian Imperial Forces). He served in the Middle East, France and Belgium with the 2nd Australian Battalian, his rank of Company Sergeant Major. For bravery in Belgium the Belgium authorities conferred on him their highest award the " Croix de Guerre ". He also recieved the " 1914/15 Star ", the " British War Medal " and the " Victory Medal ".
