Notes
a. Note:   Edward Alexander Stauffer Written by William John Stauffer
Edward was born on November 19 1910 in Cleveland Ohio. In his early childhood his family moved to Mt. Eaton Ohio. With the exception of about a 2 year stay in Canton Oh., Ed was raised and went to school in Mt. Eaton. He worked as a farm hand on some of the local farms around Mt. Eaton. He told of time spent with his many Amish friends from the area. Ed also worked for Schofter Bros. Hardware and feed store in Mt. Eaton.
In 1929 Ed turned 19 and the country was hit by the great depression. It meant hard times for many families and the Stauffer family was no exception. Ed felt that one less mouth to feed at home would make life easier for his family, and at 19 he had an urge to see what was on the other side of the hill.
So Edward hopped a freight train and headed west in search of work and adventure. He spent ? Years on the bum and told some exciting stories. He talked of other hobos and how they helped each other get along, how he worked as a migrant crop picker in the south and west, how he rode the freight trains to see the country, and the years he spent working with the circus. He had fond memories of the famous people of the times that he had met. The mast notable was Tom Mix of early western movie fame.
Finally, the economy improved and ed returned to Mt. Eaton and went to work at winesburg provision as a meat cutter.
While visiting a friend in Canton Oh., Ed met and fell in love with a beautiful young lady from Pennsboro Wv. By the name of Fredda hogue, and on November 12 1935 they were married.
Fredda and Ed moved to Cleveland Oh. In 1935 and Ed secured a job with Lincoln Electric as a supervisor. While working at Lincoln, he was in a serious accident one of the machines exploded, and he suffered a fractured scull and major damage to his left forearm. He spent many weeks in the hospital and they had to use part of his leg bone to reconstruct his left arm.
Fredda and Ed had two children: James Edward born september 19 1936 William John born april 10 1938
When world war ii broke out he was ineligible to serve in active service because of the accident, however he did volunteer to work with civil defense as a air raid warden.
Eventually problems developed with the marriage. Ed and Fredda were divorced on september 5 1944. Ed quit his job with lincoln and went back to work as a meat cutter in Cleveland. He was remarried to Anna Radjenovic in 1946.
Ed opened a tavern 1946 called the Crobar. It was located in Cleveland at e 45th and st clair ave. In 1950, he sold the Crobar and opened the Croation Tavern. It was located in Cleveland at E 33rd and St Clair ave. Ed operated the Croation Tavern until he retired in 1972.
Ed stauffer died february 28 1974 (he was 64 years old) and was laid to rest in Calvary cemetery in Cleveland Oh.
Ed was quick tempered, but also quick to forgive. He never backed down from any responsibility, or any argument for that matter. His generosity was evident to all who knew him.
He was the most sincere and caring person that I have ever had the pleasure to know.
