Note: !THE STORY OF JESS & DAISY HUMBYRD, as told by their daughter, BERTICE. JESS & DAISY came to Missouri & stayed some time. JESS didn't think he could make a living though. JESS & DAISY HUMBYRD left Missouri about 1912 & went to Washington by train. They stayed at the ranch at Swauk Prairie for several years. JESS drove a mail hack for some time between Liberty & Cle Elum. They lived in a little cabin in Liberty. JIM was born at Cle Elum. After leaving Liberty, they lived on the JIM EVANS ranch at Swauk Prairie for 3 years in a tent. It was comfortable, with walls of wood, a wood floor & a door. She remembers once it caught fire from a fire in the cook stove, but was soon diminished by JESS dumping a pail of water on it. She says JESS was sick with Brights disease while they lived in the tent. She & her mother, DAISY, made ice cream for him all winter by putting the milk mixture in a bucket with a bail & turning it around & around in a pan of snow. This tent is where HAZEL was born in 1914. She was a 7 month baby, but the doctor saved her. They had to warm all her clothes when they dressed her each time. About a year later, they moved to Cle Elum. ADA BELLE was born there. 7 months later they moved to Portland, Oregon, where JESS was already going to Adco Auto School. ALFRED & LEONA were also living in Port- land at that time. JESS worked at the ship yards in Portland during World War I. God had healed him of the Brights disease. He worked at various jobs during the year, including a broom factory for a little while. They rented a different house in several districts of Portland. Then JESS bought 1/4 acre out in the Wookstock district. They built a home there. Just a shell the 1st winter, gradually he finished it a little at a time as he could afford it. People didn't borrow money for everything then, as it was too hard to make enough to pay back with interest. DAISY lost 2 girls. Then, shortly before KENNETH was born, JIM & 2 or 3 friends of his decided to see the country. They got a freight train ride out of Portland & went to California. They found the grass wasn't as green in the other pasture as it seemed. JIM got hungry a few times, & the boys star- ted back for Portland on a freight train. JIM's quilt bundle slipped, he tried to catch it, & fell from the train. His right arm was severed. Some- one got him to the hospital. He was 17 years old. Some kind people took an interest in him, they would go see him, then write & tell DAISY how he was. The news of JIM's accident was very hard on his parents, as JESS' health wasn't very good, & DAISY was expecting & was unable to go see him. His grandfather, JIM EVANS went to see him. He had to learn to write with his left hand. He went on to Reed College in Portland & finished there. He now lives in Boise, Idaho. He worked for Game & Fish, but is now retired. BER- TICE says he is a better driver than lots of folk with 2 hands, it is amazing the things he can do. KENNETH was born in a taxi on the way to the hospital. He now lives in Portland & works at Esco. He has a Japanese wife & 3 children. He met his wife, TOYO, in Okinawa, when he was in the service. HAZEL, too, lives in Portland. ADA BELLE lives in Longview, WA. Thanks to BERTICE DEATON.
