a. Note:   John Murphy was a gardener for the College of All Hallows, a seminary in Dublin. The stone cottage on the campus grounds just inside the main gate, where he and Mary Ann lived, is still standing. The Murphy family left Ireland and sailed to Lexington about 1855 or 1856.
  John Murphy became a miller in Lexington, and their home was located near the historical Anderson house, right in the area of the Civil War Battle of Lexington. John Gueguen has done considerable research on this period, published as "A Popular History of the Battle of Lexington" in 1952.
