a. Note:   Alias:<ALIA> /Joe/ Cause of Death:<CAUS> Murdered by Gun Shot Address:<ADDR>
  Wehutty North Carolina
Cherokee He cut other peoples fields with a scythe. One morning the revenuers, came to the cabin to arrest Joe for moonshining. The cabin was devided by a blanket from the fire place and sleeping area. Joe sat down by the fire and got dressed, accept for his boots, he said I have to get my boots, and went behind the blanket. After a while the law men began to wonder, look around the blanket and Joe had left by the window. ========================================================================= Joseph was shot by Fulton Buck Newman age 17 years old, who also killed Bob Rogers. They were killed at Wolf Pen Gap near Burns Gap at Shoal Creek. Nance Gibson and Elmer Hughes were witness to the shotting. Elmer Hughes hid under the foot log that Buck walked accross going down the mountian. Mr. & Mrs. Milton Payne's house is where Buck went to and toad them what happened. He went to bed there and slept well. The next day they went up the mountian and brought the bodies down. Mrs. Payne layed them out. Tom Crowder, Joe's brother came by pedling and they asked him if he would look at his brother, he lifted the sheet and said he looks natural. Elmer Hughes tesified for Fulton Buck Newman, and no bill was returned so Buck went free. It seems that Joe & Bob were teasing Buck. My father said that his father (Joe) was going to cut Buck's throat. They had been drinking and gambling and a woman was in volved. Julis Richard Stuart made the coffin for Joseph Crowder.
