Notes
a. Note:   Note: This is a clipping from a periodical called "Genealogy and History" (I doubt if it's still published) pub. in Washington DC, dated 4-15-1946:
"There was another KELSO family in Rockbridge Co., VA, which is said to have stemmed from '3 brothers' who came to America c.1750: Alexander, Joseph, and Hugh. The Rev. Alexander, the eldest, missionaried from Augusta Co. west to the Greenbrier region (W. Va.) where he had a land grant. He and wife d. c.1760, leaving sons Alexander Jr. and Hugh, who were reared by their uncle Hugh. Alexander Jr. md. Margaret BALCH during the Rev. War, in which he was a soldier, & 1798-1800 moved to Knoxville, Tenn. The son, Hugh, also went to Knoxville after marriage. Joseph Kelso, middle bro., md. Elizabeth LAIRD (taught school among the Indians near Staunton, Augusta Co. seat); later moved to a place on Cheat River, Preston Co., W.Va., where a son was drowned in the Cheat. Joseph's son, Henry (b. Sep 25, 1767; d. 1832) went 1st to KY, where he md. Jan 29, 1795 Jane WELLS (dau. of John whose Mar. 24, 1820 will is in Montgomery Co., KY), & c. 1808 went to Lincoln Co., TN, where he was a founder of Fayetteville, the Co. seat. Hugh KELSO, youngest bro. of the trio, lived near Brownsburg, Rockbridge Co., md. Mary WALKER & bought land which was part of a Borden grant; d. 1813. Hugh & Mary had: Joseph; William; James, b. 1761, pensioned Rev. War soldier (md. Aug 24, 1789 Betsy SITLINGTON, dau. of John); Charles (md. June 6, 1794 Mary McPHEETERS, dau. of Wm.); Hugh (md. Apr 22, 1794 Fanny or Jenny MOORE); Walker (md. in Caroline Co. June 14, 1803 Sally CHAPMAN). In addition to these six, Hugh & Mary possibly also had 3 more: Elizabeth KELSO who md. Dec. 6, 1783 Robert CULTON; Margaret KELSO who md. July 5, 1783 John WALKER; Katherine KELSO who md. Apr. 10, 1794 Joseph WALKER (bro. of preceding John & son of Alexander). Children of Charles and Mary (McPHEETERS) KELSO are given in the Descendants of John Walker of Wigton & those of Dr. Hugh & Jane (Moore) KELSO are given in a letter of 11-12-1882 from Mrs. Mary A. Kelso, of Leavenworth, Ind. I can furnish these data if desired [writes the author]. The family of James & Betsy (SITLINGTON) KELSO is pretty well indicated in Chalkley's 3 vols of Augusta Co. records."
