Obituary (Source: Pleasant Hill Historical Society) ANNA BROWNE EDELEN, the third daughter of Stephen E. and Margaret C. Browne, was born January 30th 1865 in Boyle County Kentucky, and came with her parents from Danville Ky. to Pleasant Hill Mo. in December 1879. Shortly after arriving in Missouri-then at the age of fifteen, she was stricken with a severe spell of pneumonia which left her a sufferer of hay fever and asthma, which continued throughout her life. She attended the Public School of those days, and following this was a pupil of the Brannock Institute located in the old "Stone House On The Hill" in the east part of town. On the 11th day of December 1889 she was united in marriage to the late Judge Henry B. Edelen, and spent major portion of their married life on farm purchased from the Shuttleworth Estate, located near Ore, about six miles southwest of Pleasant Hill. To this union was born four children -- three of whom survive her; a son Browne Edelen of Sedalia Mo., and two daughters Margaret Gulick of Olathe Kansas, and Evelyn Cummings of Fair Oaks California. Also one brother, William C. Browne of Rogers Arkansas. She had resided in and near Pleasant Hill over a period of more than 71 years. The Edelens retired from the farm more than twenty years ago having purchased property on north Taylor that was the former home of the late A. W. (Toney) Young. Early in life she united with the Presbyterian Church and was received into membership under the ministry of Dr. Chaney then pastor, and he will be remembered by the old time members, as a strong man of God, and one who exemplified his religious teachings in his daily living. Her faith was of the old school type that was anchored deep in the tenets of her religious belief. Presbyterianism meant much more to her than is conveyed in name only; she having a long line of antecedents who were of that faith and doctrine. Her life in these latter years, was a living testimony of faith in action; witnessed by her faithful attendance upon the preached Word, and her loyalty to her Church and to those who minister in His name. Her spirit was enriched by her earnestness an zeal, and in turn enriched the lives of others who came within the sphere of her influence. Her presence amongst us will be missed. Heaven is made richer and this old world is poorer in the death of this good woman. Roy: Please append the following at proper place, in this "Obituary" I have arranged for you to print in your paper at the demise of my sister. Mrs. H. B. Edelen, this city, now on vacation in California, has enjoyed one of the main events of the California stay, original contemplation of which had much to do in leading her at last to make the trip -- a reunion gathering with her brothers and sisters. This was held on Wednesday, June 22nd, in the home of one of the sisters, Mrs. A. J. Schieser, Greenville, Calif. The Schiesers have a comfortable country home there. Of the family of six children of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Browne coming with them to Pleasant Hill in 1879, five survive, being Mrs. Edelen, Mrs. Ardis B. Smith, San Francisco, Edmund A. Browne, Long Beach, Wm. C. Browne, Berkeley, and Mrs. Schieser. The five were together at the recent meeting in the Schieser home. It was the first time all had been under one roof in nearly 30 years. Added to the party were the wives of Edmund and William Browne. Forty-three years ago last October 24 here in Pleasant Hill there was a group picture taken of these five Browne children. It was by the late J. A. Ainsworth. The recent gathering was an opportunity not to be overlooked, so the five were grouped once more and again "shots" were taken. Now they have the old and new pictures to compare and talk about. Mrs. H. B. Edelen, accompanied by her long-time friend, Miss Mary Campbell, Kansas City, left by train Monday night for a stay of undetermined length in Colorado, in hope of there being enable to avoid asthma, which at this time each year greatly troubles her. (Source: Pleasant Hill Historical Society, news article dated August 28, 1942) Mrs. Anna Edelen, after a long stay with the family of her daughter, Mrs. E. H. Cummings, Richmond, Calif., is back at her home here on N. Taylor street; for the time being Mrs. Vaughn Jackson is staying with her. Mrs. Cummings who made the homeward trip with her mother started back to California Tuesday. She says Richmond is now the center of a population of some 250,000; not so many years ago it was about the size of Pleasant Hill. (Source: Pleasant Hill Historical Society, news article dated April 7, 1944) REUNION AT EDELEN HOME (Source: Pleasant Hill Historical Society, news article dated October 10, 1946) Notable Family Gathering Held This Week in Pleasant Hill. A rather interesting family gathering has gone on this week at the home of Mrs. Anna Edelen, 205 N. Taylor, where in addition to a few other kin, there were gathered Mrs. Edelen's brothers, E. A. Browne, Long Beach, Calif., and Wm. C. Browne, Rogers, Ark., and her sisters, Mrs. Ardis Browne Smith, San Francisco, and Mrs. Eleanor Schieser, Greeneville, Calif. Mrs. Smith, who is 79, and Mrs. Schieser, 75, came in by plane from San Francisco, their first trip by air, which both found enjoyable. Tuesday at the Edelen home there was a special dinner in honor of the visitors -- centered about a large roast turkey, chickens and a Missouri ham, just to mention the "high points" -- and besides the five visitors noted, there were also present Ralph Browne and family, of Milwaukee, the latter Browne being a son of Wm. C. Browne; Mrs. Wm. Gulick and her daughter, Mrs. Gene Kuhn, and the latter's children, Olathe, Kas., Mrs. Gulick being a daughter of Mrs. Edelen. Also in the party were Mr. and Mrs. McKee Welsh, Kansas City, old-time friends of the Browne family, and Mrs. Etha Baldwin, whose friendship with the Brownes dates back to childhood days, and who resides at Leavenworth, Kas. Edmund and William Browne, Mesds. Smith, Schieser and Edelen, children of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen E. Browne, all born near Danville, Ky., came with their parents to Pleasant Hill, the party leaving train here the day before Christmas, 1879, and for many years Pleasant Hill was the family home, all the children remaining here until grown. The day they stepped off that train 67 years ago the Browne children had a combined age of 49 years; today the combination figures are 384. It is a tribute to the Browne stamina that even to this day, despite the up-piled years, they are all at least fairly vigorous and retain an alert outlook on life. The parents, too, of Kentucky Presbyterian stock, were also sturdy, but long since were "fathered unto their fathers." Mrs. Browne passing on in 1909, Mr. Browne in 1915. The last previous time these Browne sisters and brothers were together was in 1938 at the home of Mrs. Schieser, Greenville, Calif. The local gathering is now being dispersed in part, Edmund Browne having left Kansas City at 2 o'clock this Thursday morning for California, and William having started on his return to Rogers. However (which is something much to Mrs. Edelen's pleasure) the two sisters are remaining with her for a short visit. Mrs. Edelen is 87 (Source: Pleasant Hill Historical Society, news article dated January 31, 1952) Mrs. Anna Edelen, 205 N. Gulick) at Olathe, Kas., and daughter Evelyn (Mrs. Earl Cummins) of Fair Oaks, Calif., talked to her by phone. Mrs. Anna Edelen, 205 N. Taylor, two weeks in Research hospital, Kansas City, will be moved soon to a nursing home at 3417 E. 17th St. for further observation by and attention from a kidney specialist. Mrs. Edelen's daughter, Mrs. Earl (Evelyn) Cummings, Fair Oaks, Calif., who has been here to see her mother, plans to start home Friday night. The other daughter, Mrs. Eveline Cummings, of Fair Oaks, Calif., sent her a beautiful potted chrysanthemum, which graced the center of the well appointed table. Others present were Mr. and Mrs. Leo Spalding, Kansas City; Mr. and Mrs. Euel Young and Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Foote, Belton, and Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Craig, Harrisonville.
