Notes
a. Note:   o his many friends. "Bud" being of Welch heritage, delivered into this world by his father, who was a medical doctor, was born at home on a Thursday, in the Spring of May 18, 1876, to Minerva Ann Easley, and William Thomas Woodward, M. D. Bud was a healthy, fair complexed baby, with piercing blue eyes, and brown hair. He grew up in Grangeville, Louisiana. "Bud" was the seventh born child and youngest of eight children that lived, which made him the "baby of the family." He was also the apple of his mother's eye, and the baby son of proud Dr. Woodward. As he grew, he learned how to fish and hunt, and like the other boys he had to work on the farm. Bud was baptized into the Baptist church, and had a good Christian upbringing. It is not known how much formal education Bud received, probably not much, because farming came first in those years. It is a fact that Dr. Woodward did hire a tutor for his son. One such tutor was a well educated young lady named Nancy "Nannie", who was just six months younger than Bud. As fate would have it, teenagers Bud and Nannie fell in love, and years later did get married. It is said that Mrs. Woodward, "Bud's mother" never did like that redheaded girl that married her baby son, but Dr. Woodward liked her just fine. Nanny was spirited, and her husband, Jim adored her. Bud and Nannie traveled to Greensburg, Louisiana and applied for a marriage licence. Then on the summer day of Saturday, June 4, 1898, in Pine Grove, Louisiana, twenty two year old Bud married his twenty one year old redheaded, blue eyed sweetheart Nannie Emma Nesom, making her his June bride. Nannie called her new husband, Jim. Nancy Emma Nesom was born at home on Wednesday, October 18, 1876 at Pine Grove, Louisiana. She was the third child, and first girl of nine children born to Jane Olive Tabor, and Thomas William Nesom. The Nesom's being of Welch heritage, hence the red hair, blue eyes, and fair complexions. Married life began for Jim and Nannie. Jim was a tall, gentle, good looking man, and his bride was a tiny, pretty woman, who stood about 5' 0" tall. It was the beginning of a good, honest marriage that endured many hardships, and was rewarded with many blessings. In fact almost eleven months after their marriage, a daughter named Essie Lee was born, but for some sad reason she died at 6 months old. That very next year another daughter named Bessie Louise was born, and died at 6 months old. Thanksgiving of 1901 was drawing to an end, and young Nannie was in the last stages of her third pregnancy. Then on December 9, 1901, Nannie gave birth to her first son, and named him William Howard Woodward. "Howard" they would call him, was his mother's eyes, and his daddy's joy. Howard was a beautiful baby with his fair complexion, red hair, and blue eyes. Spoiled, too! Oh yes, he was a mama's baby. Because, Nanny would pack her young son around so much, he didn't learn to walk until he was one year old. She loved her baby, and sewed fancy dresses for him to wear. A strong bond of love was formed between mother and son that lasted a lifetime. When Howard was just five years old, he had beautiful red curly hair that his mother couldn't bear to get cut. In fact his hair had never been cut in his life. One day Howard's granddaddy, Dr. Woodward came to visit, and before Nanny knew it, the good doctor had cut all of Howard's beautiful red curls off, wanting him to look like a boy. Nannie was so upset she cried for days. Soon more babies arrived, 15 babies in all. Jesse James, Purcell, Nettie Mae, Brown, Herbert, Willie, Ouida Jane, Fannie Lou, Mitchell Tabor, James Dewitt, Edna Katherine, and Robert Kinchen. The children grew and all of these children were brought up and baptized in the Baptist church.
