Note: Grandmother Eleni was the youngest child of Athanosios and Kaliope Theofanides. Grandfather persuaded the Theofanides family to allow Eleni to marry before her older sister, Anastasia and to immediately leave Agathopolis and start a new life in the United States with her husband Michael Chrissos. The Theofanides family were well-to-do compared to the Chrissos family. They settled in NYC. Grandfather had a grocery store on seventh avenue. Within four years of their marriage the new Chrissos family had three daughters named respectively Despina, Kaliopy and Mary. Eleni Theofanides, in every sense of the word, was grandfather's partner. She was not only his wife and the mother of his children, but she also helped him in their store. In 1924, the family moved from NYC to 160 Clinton Avenue, Union City, NJ. On July 4, 1925 Grandmother Eleni gave birth to her last child, a son, George Michael Chrissos. Sometime during the early part of 1926, Grandmother Eleni became ill and on February 10, 1926 was admitted to Christ Hospital, Jersey City. Dr. Marmar was her doctor. On 2/10/26 Dr. Marmar operated on Grandmother Eleni. Her appendix had ruptured and the toxins were poisoning her. The operation, I fear, was a little too late. She died at 1:15 am on the morning of 2/12/1926 from acute appendicitis with complications of toxemia and operative shock. There was no autopsy performed and she was buried 2/14/1926 at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Maspeth(the borough of Queens), NY. The undertaker was Joseph Introcaco.
