a. Note:   f the 1891 census. By the time of the 1901 census, the family were living in the Round House (entry 44) next to Chaddleworth's Post Office after 6 houses in New Row and he was a 15 year old carter on a farm.
  He married Martha Ann Collins at Christ Church, Reading and later moved with her and their first two children, Violet and Albert Edward to 10 Long Barn Lane, Reading about 1911 and remained there until his death.
  By the time he saw service in the Royal Horse Artillery during the First World war (1914 - 1918), he and Annie had completed their family with Wilf and Les. Bert saw action in Mons and Ypres. His name is mentioned on the Roll of Honour which hung in Whitley Hall Methodist Church until that Church was sold to the Hindus in November 1997 when the Roll of Honour was given to Christ Church, Reading.
  He worked at Jacksons.
  On his 59th birthday, he received a very special present as his granddaughter, Daphne Joyce Barnes, was born that day so they shared a birthday for the next 22 years.
  His funeral service was held at 2.30 pm at Whitley Hall Methodist Church, Whitley Street, Reading on April 18th, 1967 and at 3 pm at the Crematorium then the family went to the home of his eldest son, Ted (232 Basingstoke Road). In his later years, it had been Ted's wife, Rose, who had provided his main cooked meal each day and one of her family took it across the road to him before he was hospitalised.
