  From age 14, he worked for Morlands Brewery in Queens Road, Reading for 47 years, being in charge of the stores for many years. He cycled to work and home again for lunch. He was made redundant when the Reading branch was closed and amalgamated with the Abingdon branch. However, he maintained his links with Morlands until he died, attending a Watch Club Reunion in Abingdon each year. He had received a gold watch after 20 years and 40 year's service, the latter being in 1963 when he received a gold hunter from Major-General Fielden, along with 2 others - Alec Carstairs and ?. He had been the Honorary Secretary and Treasurer of the Morlands Reading Darts League - his other sporting interests were cricket and football as a youngster and bowls in his later years.
  During the Second World War, he had served in Northern Ireland, being a Corporal. He was a very keen gardener and had a 20 pole allotment in which he grew mostly vegetables.
  Although not a Christian, he encouraged his wife and family's participation in Church life, even building sheds at 232 Basingstoke Road to hold the bags of milk tops when Rose was encouraging the 1st Reading Explorers to collect them for the purchase of a guide dog. After Rose died, he and Daphne moved to 12 Rowley Road, Reading in 1974 where he lived until he died. That year, he took his first flight - to Amsterdam with her - and from then on took several holidays abroad each year.
  Although brought up not to show his feelings he celebrated with a glass of whiskey what would have been his and Rose's ruby and golden wedding anniversaries at the exact time of their marriage. After some minor strokes, including one when he was in Mojacar, he was paralysed by a stroke on Monday 22nd February but could still speak until Wednesday when he lost conciousness and died the following Sunday.
