a. Note:   Barnes had married Maria Minty on 2 May, 1830 at Lambourn, Berkshire. However, the only Mintys born around 1810 are detailed as Mary Minty (daughter of James) christened 25SEP1808 in Ringwood, Hampshire and 15NOV1812 (daughter of John) also christened in Ringwood whereas Linkenholt, Hampshire consistently appears on the censuses. There is also mention of a Maria Minty (daughter of Charlotte who was christened in Lambourn on 30SEP1810.
  Maria had 14 children, of whom 3 died in infancy - twins, Kezia and Eliza who were 5 and 2 weeks old respectively when they died in 1837 and Robert who was 11 months when he died in 1846. She had her first child, George, when she was 20 and her last, Joseph, when she was 44. Two subsequent children were given the names of Eliza and Robert. Maria is mentioned, along with her husband, William, and their children in each of the 1841 - 1871 Chaddleworth Censuses. She is mentioned as aged 30 with 4 living children in 1841 and 40 with 9 living children in 1851 (record 61). By 1861 (record 72), aged 49, she has 5 children living at home, her eldest 5 and Robert not being mentioned in their census entry. Aged 63 in 1871, she had her unmarried son, Robert, and her married son, Charles with his wife Elizabeth living with her and William. The 1871 Chaddleworth census is the first to mention her having a job, when she is described as being a Charwoman.
  It would seem that she became a widow between 1871 and 1881 because, by the 1881 Chaddleworth Census, she is married to Isaac Powell (67 and born in Chaddleworth) and, as Maria Powell, might have escaped my notice but for the fact that her son, Alfred Barnes (aged 31 and unmarried) was staying with her and Isaac (record 86), being a private soldier on furlough. They were living at Village Cottage, Shefford Road, Chaddleworth then (134313 RG11 1289/45 p. 16).
