Note: marriage record of Julianna Rebeka Fredriksdatter (1) were first located and verified. The marriage record gave the following information (FHL #307083, Vol. 8, p. 289 No. 10): "Oluf Olsen Hedman (2), bachelor and renter, born in Aaske in Jamtland (Sweden), son of Oluf Eriksen, married 9 Oct 1861 Juliane Rebeka Frediksdatter, born at Gronmo, daughter of Fredrik Jorgensen." Her birth record indicatres that she was born 6 Jun 1836 at Gronmo, and christened 21 Aug 1836 in Somna Parish, Nordland County, Norway (FHL #1693788, Vol. A5, p. 76, No.28). She was a twin. Her twin sister was named Vilhelmine Lydia. The father was listed as a farmer at the Gronmo farm. Almost every farm or farming community in Norway had a name. Although these farm names very in the records, they have been standardized here and on the enclosed charts in their modern spelling or as they are found in most of the records. For example in the above records, thje farm was listed variously as Gronmoe, Gronmoen, and Jollmoen but is listed on the enclosed charts and elsewhere in these notes in its standardized to, Gronmo. On the old family group sheet John Hedman supplied to the researcher, the father of Juliana Rebeka Fredriksdatter was listed as Benjamin Fredrickson (sic). Although the ordiance work had been done for him as the father of Juliana Rebekka and although he was listed as her father in the 1865 census, he was actually a step-father. Her father, Fredrik Jorgensen (3) died at sea on a trip to Lofoten at the age of 38, and his body was not located (FHL #1693788, Vol. A5, p. 452, No. 14). His widow remarried 7 Jul 1844 to the 33 year old bachelor Benjamin Mattias Petersen in Bronnoy Parish, Nordland County, Norway (FHL #0307083, Vol 8, p. 363, No.4). Apparently this is where the name Benjamin comes from and it may be that Fredrickson was supplied by someone who was not familiar with the Norwegian patronymic naming customs. A special source in Norway which has been published for many communities thoughout the country is a community history-genealogy, called a "bygdebok". In these books a local historian or genealogist traces the history of an entire community, often giving a genealogical record and historical account of each family that lived on each farm in the region from the earliest available record in the 1600's and into the 20th century. One such book has been published for the parish of Somna and is called Somna Gard og slekt (Somna farms and genealogy). In volume four, published in 1996 by Tor Q. Mathisen, there is a lot of interesting information on the Fredrik Jorgensen family. This information was used as an outline for compiling this family genealogy. Enclosed is a translation of the information found in this book pertaining to the Fredrik Jorgensen family. This gave interesting information such as, that Fredrik Jorgensen was a fiddler. Apparently he also fathered five children by different women before he got married. The birth records for each of these illegitimate children were researched and the following details were obtained: 1. Mille, daughter of the unconfirmed boy Frederik Jorgensen of Tomaslia and Johanna Henriksdatter of Djupaunet, was born 15 Feb 1821 and christened 10 Mar 1821 in Velfjord Parish (FHL #0125062, Vol. 11, p. 131, No. 1) 2. Johan (Fredrik), son of bachelor Frederic Jorgensen of Tomaslia and the widow Lorense Pedersdatter of Barstad, born 4 Oct 1821, christened 20 Oct 1821 in Vassas (Bindal) Parish (FHL #0125058, Vol. l, p. 16, No. 15). In the birth records his name was listed as only Johan, however in the Somna bygdebok his name was listed as Johan Fredrik. A copy of his marriage was located in the records of Andenes (Dvergberg) Parish, where his name was also listed as Johan Fredrik Frederiksen (FHL #0125088, Vol, 7, p. 165, No. 4). He married 5 Sep 1868 Peroline Jorgine Trane Pedersdatter. 3.The stilborn son was supposedly born on the Tomaslia farm in Velfjord Parish. No record of his birth or death was listed in the parish church records. Apparently the information of this child's birth came from the court records and not church records since the child was born in secrecy and the body was hidden. No attempt was made to document this in the original court records but the the published account from the Somna bygdebok was sufficient for the present. 4. Petronelle Chierstine, daughter of the farm hand Friedrich Jorgensen of Tomaslia and Miss Doret Pederdatter of Hoyholm, was born 20 Mar 1826 and was christened 23 April 1826 (fourth Sunday after Easter)in Alsahaug (Vevelstad) Parish (FHL # 0125055, p. 128, No. 63). Her marriage record was also verified in the Alstahaug Parish records (FHL #0307075, Vol. 16, p. 163, No. 19). She married 10 Oct 1853 Andreas Hansen. Her name was listed at that time as Petronelle Christen Fredrichsdatter. 5. Jakobia, daughter of the farm hand Friedrich Jorgensen of Tomaslia and the farm maiden Kirstina Andersdatter of Halleraunet, was born 29 Sep 1826 and christened 15 Oct 1826 in Velfjord Parish (FHL #0125062, Vol. 11, p. 161, No. 19). Although he apparently fathered several children before his marriage in 1827, there is no record of him fathering other children out of wedlock after his marriage. You will notice that different versions of spelling have been used in the above records. For example the name Fredrik is spelled variously: Fredrich Friedrich, Frederic, Frederik, Fredrik, etc. Spelling was left to the disgression of the parish scribe or pastor and there was not formal spelling conventions then as there are now. An attempt has been made to list the name as it appears in the original record when describing the varous records here. This will give you a feel for the way it appears in most of the records. In the bygdebok, the author had a tendency to standardize the given names as they appear in modern Norwegian rather than deal with the variations found in many records. Rather than following this practice, the convention has been in the enclosed charts of listing the name as it appears in the birth record of th individual or as it appears in a majority of the records. Where special circumstances exist, such as the second illegitimate child listed above where the birth record omitted the middle name, notes of explanation has been added to the enclosed family group sheets. The marriage record of Fredrik Jorgensen to Pernille Donnesdatter (4) was located in the Velfjord Parish records (FHL #0125062, Vol. 11, p. 441, No. 8) At that time Fredrik Jorgensen was 25 years old and Pernille Donnesdatter was 24 years old. The birth records of their seven children, as identified in the Somna Bygdebok, was identified in the original Lutheran parish records as follows: 1. Olianna Lydia Fredriksdatter born 8 Aug 1827 at Bru, Christened 26 Aug 1827 in Velfjord Parish (FHL #0125062, Vol. 11, p. 163, No. 9). 2. Lorents Dirik Fredriksen born 9 Sep 1829 at Bru, Christened 3 Oct 1829 in Velfjord Parish (FHL #0125062, Vol. 11, p. 170, No. 17). 3. Cathrine Davidia Fredriksdatter born 5 Apr 1831 at Bru, christened 24 Apr 1831 in Velfjord Parish (FHL #0125062, Vol. 11, p. 173, No. 7) 4. Flotman Peder Fredriksen born 28 Jun 1833 at Thomaslia, christened 21 Jul 1833 in Velfjord Parish (FHL #0125062, Vol. 11, p. 182, No. 12) 5. (Stillborn child), born/died 19 Sep 1834 at Thomaslia, reported by the parents 29 Sep 1834 in Velfjord Parish (FHL #1282927, Vol. 14 (1834-1874), p. 474). 6. Julianna Rebeka Fredriksdatter (twin) born 6 Jun 1836 at Gronmo, christened 21 Aug 1836 in Somna Parish (FHL #16793788, Vol. A5, p. 76, No. 28). 7. Vilhelmine Lydia Fredriksdatter (twin) born 6 Jun 1836 at Gromno, christened 21 Aug 1836 in Somna Parish (FHL #1693788, Vol. A5, p. 76, No. 29). The father in these records was listed as a renter and farmer. While in Velfjord Parish, he apparently leased property to farm, but morgaged and operated an entire farm in Gronmo (Somna Parish). Although there was a bygdebok for the Veljord Parish, it was a small single volume and did not give much information on the various families. It will be be referred to later in this report. Of the seven children of Fredrik Jorgensen and Pernille Donnesdatter, two died young: Lorents Diderik Frederiksen, 4 1/2 years old, died of a common illness on 25 Jun 1834 at Tomaslia, buried 2 Jul 1834 in Velfjord Parish (FHL #1282927, Vol. 14, p. 474, No. 25). Oleanna Lydia Frederiksdatter, 11 years old, died of a common illiness on 26 Jan 1838 at Gronmo, buried 28 Jan 1838 in Somna Parish (FHL #1693788, Vol. A5, p. 450, No.16) The marriage record for your ancestor Julianna Rebeka was discussed earlier. The marriage records of her other brother and sister were also located in the Norwegian records: Bachelor and renter Johannes Andersen, age 30, son of Anders Pedersen, married 11 Nov 1863 Wilhelmine Lydia Fredriksdatter, age 26, daughter of Fredrick Jorgensen, in Bronnoy Parish (FHL #0307083, Vol, 8, p. 292, No. 11). Peter Fredriksen, age 30, born at Tomaslia, married 30 Dec 1863 Miss Oline Elisabeth Olsdatter, age 24, born at Moe, in Bronnoy Parish (FHL #0307083, Vol. 8, p. 292, No. 12). As was mentioned previously, the father of this family, Fredrik Jorgensen died at the young age of 38 on a trip to Lofoten. Although his body was apparently not found, a record of his death was listed in the Somna Parish records (FHL #1693788, Vol. A5, p.452, No. 14). Although the date of his death was not listed, it was listed between other entries from June and July 1839, indicating he probably died at that time. His widow, Pernille Donnesdatter, married a second time 7 Jul 1844 to Benjamin Mattias Petersen in Bronnoy (FHL #0307083, Vol, 8, p. 363, No. 4). He was 33 year old, a bachelor, and son of Peter Christian Jacobsen. She was listed as a widow, 42 years old, birth place Bru, and a daughter of Donnes Johnsen. Finally a marriage record for Pernille Donnesdatter was located (FHL #1282927, Vol. 5, p. 186, No. 12) She died 2 Dec 1897 at Skaren, and was buried 5 Dec 1897 in Bronnoy Parish. She was listed as a widow of Benjamin Pehrsen, born in 1801 in Bru in Velfjord, resided last at Skarn, and died of old age. !SOURCE: Christening: FHL #0125062; Vol. 10 (1752-1819), p.155, Velfjord Parish Records. !SOURCE: Death: FHL #1693788, i.2; Vol. A5 (1834-1886), p.452, No.14. He was a resident of Gronmo in Somna Parish at the time of his death. He died at sea on a trip to Lofotan. His body was not found. His death was recorded between others in Somna Parish in June July 1839, so although the exact date of death was not recorded, it apparently took place about that time.
