My gr-gr-grandfather was James W. Van Meter. My great grandfather was James Henry--brother of Thomas Jefferson Van Meter. I have info on both James W. and James H's families. I am corresponding with a direct decendent of Thomas Jefferson. She doesn't have an e-mail address but I will write her. Please e-mail me.

My James is in the Ross County, Ohio censuses of 1850--60--70. His marriage to Editha Rue Dawson in 1832 is on record in Ross County. Thomas J. Van Meter, brother of my James moved to Mo. Do you know anything about William (1769 ) or Abram (1771 ) both sons of Joseph and Margaret Morgan? I appreciate your help. Marie

Hi Marie, I figured it had to be something like that. I had Howes in Ross County at various times so have done some work on Ross County records, etc. The Beers History of Clinton County has quite a bit on the Van Meters. This is a brief overview of what I find on page 251: Morgan was the oldest of the five sons of Joseph Van Meter. His brothers were Joseph, Isaac, Abraham, and William, all of whom , except William, were at one time residents of the old town of Deerfield, on the little Miami River, in what is now Warren County. They were said to already have families when they arrived. Their father, Joseph, was a native of Maryland. Various members of the family also lived in Highland County at one time or another, as well as in Kentucky. ( See my notice posted sometime back regarding the Genealogy Library Online coverage of the Van Meters in Kentucky. Also, Abraham Van Meter is listed as one of the 23 men with Squire Boone in 1780 in Painted Stone, KY) The Clinton County book doesn't have much more than that on any but Morgan VM. If you'd like me to check the Genealogy Library book for you, let me know. I'll be pretty busy for the next couple of weeks with Vacation Bible School but let me know and I'll work it in. Joan
