Note: !In a letter written by Norma Burns Winn is the following: "We believe James Crook and Sophia Mason to have been the parents of eleven children, but I really have detailed information concerning three of them. Your Joseph Crook born 6 Jun 1823 in Chalford, Gloucester, Eng. Hannah Crook born 31 Oct 1824 and Eliza Crook born 7 May 1837, who was the great grandmother of Norma Burns Winn. In passing, I might state that a very delightful and gracious person (Mrs Frances Neff Taylor) presently residing in State College, Pennsylvania is one of the descendents of Hannah Crook, who married William Hughes. Mrs. Taylor is very much interested in genealogy. My great grandmother, Eliza, married Samuel Madden and my grandmother Eliza Jane Madden was born to this union on the 11th of April 1858, at Farmington, Davis Co., Ut. Shortly after my grandmother's birth, her father Samuel Madden left Farmington to seek his fortune in the gold fields of California and was never heard from again. It was presumed he died crossing the desert. Later my great grandmother, Eliza Crook Madden, married a Captain Willis who was stationed in Utah with the Johnston army. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was called back to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and Eliza and her little daughter, Eliza Jane, accompanied him there. On the 19th of April, 1863, a few days after the birth of a son, Eliza died--leaving the infant and her five year old daughter. The boy was taken into the home of the lady doctor who had cared for Eliza at his birth--and Eliza Jane went to live with a family by the name of Young who later brought her back to Utah. When the Young family returned to Utah with Eliza Jane Madden, they settled in the Mill Creek area (of Utah) and Eliza lived with them until she was old enough to earn her own livlihood by working in various homes. On Jan 24, 1878 when she was 20 years old she was married to Joseph Burns in the old Endowment House.
