MISCELLANEOUS BLIGHT. Charles AGE 39 YEARS. DIED AUGUST 2nd 1870. WALLAROO TIMES. WEDNESDAY AUGUST 3rd 1870. CORONER'S INQUEST AT MOONTA. On Tuesday 2nd inst. an inquest was held by Mr. G.F. Wyatt J.P. on the body of Charles Blight, who was killed by a fall in Buchan's Shaft at the Moonta Mines. A jury of 13 was empanelled and after viewing the body and being sworn the following evidence was taken - Dr. Herbert, duly qualified medical practitioner - I was called this morning about 9 o'clock to go to Buchan's Shaft, a man had fallen away. I went immediately, and on arrival of the man at the surface, the man was quite dead. He was taken to his home where I made an examination of the body. I found a fracture to the right thigh close to the joint. The pelvis was broken at the centre and there was a large hole through the perrinium. There was also a dislocation of the vertebrae about halfway up the back. The shock and injuries were sufficient to cause instant death. James Scoun (Scown) laborer, on being sworn stated - That about a quarter to 9 this morning Charles Blight, my mate was going down the shaft to fill the kibbles as usual. I asked him to throw the gate at the 10 fathom level. After he had gone down a few minutes I heard the gate fall, I waited whilst he was ready as I thought. Thomas Hicks came up and said Charles had fallen away, and he ordered him to go for the doctor immediately. I took a horse and rode for the docter who was there in 15 minutes. By the foreman - I should think about 8 minutes after he went down I heard the gate fall, it was a little longer than usual. I do not think the gate was too heavy for one man to lift, I could manage the gate quite easily, and I think he could. He had done it a good many times, it is a single door. Never heard the deceased say he was afraid to go to the door. He was used to go there better than myself. I found it a safe place and have worked there as long as any other man. If there was anything out of order it was always done by speaking about it. Thomas Hicks, miner, on being sworn stated - A little before 9 this morning I was working in Buchan's Shaft, and I heard a thing go down the shaft, listened for a few seconds and I heard someone groan like a man. I called to my mate and said "I think someone fell in the shaft." At the same time I went to see. When I came to the bottom, I found a man lying on his back. I took him up and put hum to lie on the brace, by that time my mate was come. I called Blight by name but could get no answer. I left my mate with him and went to the surface and told James Scown to go and get the doctor, his mate had fallen away. I went to the office to give the captain a word of it, and to get a rope and men to haul him up which was attended to. I helped to surface. I found deceased at the bottom of the 45 fathom level. By the foreman - There was a candle burning at the bottom of the 10 fathom level. I saw it when I came up. There are 2 spreaders between 10 and 45 fathom level which are necessary. I consider the place a safe one. I did not hear the door fall. The verdict - The deceased came to his death by falling in Buchan's shaft, evidently from accident.
MOONTA, August 2 This morning miner, of the name of Charles Blight, fell about 35 fathoms down one of the shafts and was killed. The poor fellow was fearfully knocked about. An inquest was held before Mr. G.F. Wyatt, J.P. No evidence was produced to show how the accident occurred. The Jury returned a verdict of accidentally killed. The man leaves a wife and family to mourn their loss.
