Note: In 1750, Phillip Goodbread, later named as a son in the will of Ludwick (Lewis) Goodbread, was apparently living in Coventry Township of Chester County, PA, as his name appears on the tax records there. Around 1750, the area in the vicinity of Philadelphia was becoming crowded for some of the adventurous pioneers, and they sought more space further West and South. Many came to the North Carolina counties of Rowan, "Old" Tryon, Surry and Wilkes. In 1768, Phillip was a Justice of the Peace in Orange County, NC, and signed a petition at New Bern, as recorded on pages 874 and 875, Volume VII, Colonial Records of NC. Sometime within the next 10 or 11 years, he moved to "Old" Tryon County, NC. "Old" Tryon County was formed in 1768, and included most of Western NC west and south of the Catawba River. The term "old" is used because in 1779, Tryon County was discontinued, and the territory was divided into some new counties, Lincoln, Rutherford and part of Burke. Phillip Goodbread enlisted in Captain Robert Porter's Company "G", Old Tryon County, NC troops, under the command of Brigadier General Rutherford, with the rank of Sergeant, on October 21, 1777. On this same date, his four sons, Joseph, John, Phillip II and Thomas, enlisted in the same company. The 1790 census showing heads of families in NC lists Phillip Goodbread, Sr. and Joseph Goodbread as residents of Burke County and John Goodbread as a resident of Rutherford County. The 1790 census lists Phillip Goodbread Sr. and Joseph Goodbread as heads of families in Burke County, NC. John Goodbread as resident of Rutherford County. During the Civil War, Morganton, the county seat of Burke County was occupied by Federal troops, and the records in the court house were deliberately destroyed in bonfires on the Courthouse lawn. In the courthouse at Rutherfordton, a number of "Gift Deeds" from Phillip Goodbread Sr. to his daughter Rachel, dated in 1809 are on file. Since Phillip is not listed in the 1810 census, it is assumed that he had died. A will has not been found, and there is no record of his wife's name. His children are listed on his family page.
