Notes
a. Note:   From "Trail of the Pioneers 1900-1967" by friends and relatives of Pioneers, North Dakota" Evald Mantei and family came to Hanks from Fortuna. Evald started his business ventures there as a farmer in that area. When Fortuna was
founded, he built a hotel. Brother Rudolph operated a lumber yard there so lumber was available. He bought a car when they first came out and used this to operated a taxi service. This service must have been a "good deal" for that time. When Hanks or Mesa was platted he decided to build a pool hall in this promising village. He purchased lot 7 in block 2 on Main Street on which to build. Again lumber was furnished by brother Rudolph. Using two four horse teams they hauled 2 wagon loads of lumber taking a long day to make the trip. Rudolph and Evald constructed the first pool hall and a house was also built which at present is to be part of the elevtor house. Here the Evald Mantei family made their home and had a son who was born to them on November 8, 1916. They named him Ferdinand, disregarding the villages offer to give him a lot if they would name him "Mesa" after the town. The Mantei's lived here about a year. They then sold their pool hall and home to Bracelsburg. The family moved to Canada and then to Oregon in the Portland area. Both Mr. and Mrs. Mantei are deceased. Ferdinand and wife visited Hanks this past summer (1946). The report an enjoyable visit alaathough we didnt' have much to show them. They reside in Portland.
