The 3rd, 7th, and 8th were originally infantry units from Western Kentucky that were mounted in 1864 to serve in Forrest's Cavalry Corp. These units were not a part of the original 3rd, 7th, and 8th Kentucky Cavalry regiments. For the few men that parole records still exist, most are listed as serving in the "8th & 12th Kentucky Cavalry." Needless to say, keeping track of unit designations is extremely confusing and I have doubts as to whether the men even knew for certain. I have seen a Kentucky pension application for a soldier who served under Sypert but listed his unit as the "8th Kentucky Cavalry."
