Note: e before their marriage. John & Elizabeth left Ohio shortly after the birth of their first child in 1853. theri granddaughter, Maude Veatch, said they lived in Iowa before settling in Missouri. Their stay in Iowa must have been a short one as their son, Samuel, was born in Macon county, Missouri in either 1856 or 1857 according to the birth records of his daughter, Elizabeth, or in Sullivan, Missouri, according to the birth records of his daughter, Maude. It could be that Samuel was born in Missouri on the parents' way to Iowa and that Samuel went to Iowa and worked for his Uncle, George Lute. The date is not known. The 1880 Historical Atlas of Macon County shows John St. Clair with eighty acres next to Alex Canada. Twenty years later he lived farther north in Valley Township, where he owned some two hundred acres. Land records were checked back to 1837, but no other early records were found pertaining to John St. Clair. Elizabeth died of childbirth on august 2, 1875.
