Note: Vicki, there could be a connection. The picture I have, says Chapel Hill, near DeQueen, Ark. I know that Charles/Charlie and Melvina Sossamon (sp) lived in or around Madill, OK in the late 40s or early 50s. I remember going to their house and my dad always called them Uncle Charlie and Aunt Mel. This Charles/Charlie is probably related to your Sassamons (sp). I'm not sure how, maybe brother. I have not looked into this since I am basically looking for my Smith family. I know that Charlie and Mel had children, and I am sure some of their relatives are still alive. Let me hear from you. I found your name and address on various message boards on the internet in reference to a book you wrote; Sossaman & Sossamon - From Coast to Coast" ed. by James E. Sossaman in 1986. I am sure you must get letters such at this one all the time and that is the reason for my apology. There was no information on how to obtain a copy or to find out about my Sossaman family. My great grandmother was Cora Lee Sossaman b. in 1876 in Arkansas. She married my great grandfather John Albert Mooneyham b. 1858 in Dallas, TX. The marriage took place in Chapel Hill, Sevier County, AR in 1894. She remarried a Griffin or Griffith after my great grandfathers death. She is buried in Houston, TX. I have no other information on her other than she had 11 children with my great grandfather. I have searched high and low with no result. Will your book help me? If so, how can I buy a copy? Sincerely, Vicki November 8, 2002 New found cousin Vicki: Noneed for an apology in contacting me! It is always a pleasure for a family historian to find a new cousin. Unfortunately my book, Sossamans & Sossamons Coast to Coast was sold out many years ago. However, I am very familiar with your Cora and will only be too happy to give your lineage back 500 years. The family came from Germany before George Washington was born and bought land from William Penn in Pennsylvania early in the 1700's and were the earliest of the so called Pennsylvania "Dutch". really Germans. the family is in the thousands today. Our ancestor, Henry Sossaman, son of the original immigrant, Jost Henrich Sassmanshausen, migrated in 1775 to North Carolina. Many of his family stayed in and live there today. Henry's son, Daniel Sossaman, had a son William Allison Sossaman who came to Arkansas about 1830. He had many childen, and your ancestor, Peter Alexander Sossamon. He had many children among them your Gr. Grandmother, Cora. Note the use of the mon ending. I am very familiar with this family and correspond regularily with many of them. I correspond regularily with some of the Mooneyhams that live in Livingston, Texas, and some near me in California. We have a family association and many of Peter's descendants attend it every two years. Most live in the Oklahoma City area. Our last reunion was held in Charleston, SC. In also publish a family newsletter and in the last issue there is a picture of Peter Alexander S., Cora's father. I am mailing you a copy of the last issue which just happens to have a picture of Cora's father, Peter Alexander Sossamon. Please respond James E. Sossaman, Family Historian
