a. Note:   ses as wedding presents. When he left Germany to come to the US in 1884 leaving his pregnant wife and two children behind planning to get work and send for them. He stopped in England first and went out drinking with friends the night before he was to sail and the next morning he missed the boat. That boat sank and for several months his wife thought he was dead until a letter from him arrived. He took another boat that landed in Savannah,GA. A lot of people on the boat had become ill and he took care of many people during the trip. One of the men, Mr Donneville, was especially grateful and offered him a job in NJ. Six months later he had made enough money to send for his family.
