He was one of four of our ancestors contracted to build Fort Hunter on the east side of Schoharie Creek where it enters the Mohawk River. Arent Van Petten, along with Barent Vrooman, Hendrick Vrooman, and Gerrit Simonse Veeder were asked by Governor Hunter of New York to build Fort Hunter October 11, 1711. It was constructed on the old site of a Mohawk village called Tienonderoga or Icanderoga. The first commandment of the fort was Captain John Scott who started the garrison with only twenty men. Its principal function was dealing with French and Indian incursions from Canada. The fortification was a square, 150 on each side with a twleve foot high wooden palisade. At each of the four angles was a two-story blockhouse with accomondations to house 20 men and housed a seven and nine pounder cannon. There was a massive swing gate at the entrance. The first chapel in 1711 was a log cabin which was later torn down and rebuilt 1741. In 1734, a parsonage was built 1 mile east of the fort. In this building, the famed Indian leader, Joseph Brant (of Revolutionary War times) translated the Bible into the Iroqouis language.
