a. Note:   ooke. He built and operated the first water gristmill in the county. He and his wife Catherine "Kate" were charter members of the Guyandotte Baptist Church in 1812, founded at the home of his brother Thomas and wife Ellen riggins Cooke. William has been honored by the West Virginia Historical Society as the founder of Oceana, as he built the first house in Oceana, laid out the town. and sold the lots. He also donated an acre of his own property for the first courthouse in 1850 when Wyoming County was created by an act of the Virginia General Assembly.
  According to the 1850 census, William Cooke, Sr. was 66. He was listed as a farmer, $1,500, can't read or write. His wife Catherine is age 60. He and his wife are buried in the plot with his father John and mother Nellie Pemberton Cooke in an area that is now the churchyard of the Deliah Methodist Church in Oceana.
