Notes
a. Note:   erous sources, with the original story appearing in The Reference Book of Wyoming County History. All sources state that John had come to America as an indentured servant, after having been lured aboard a ship in the London harbor. With him was Nellie Pemberton from Scotland. Both ended up being indentured to a Virginia planter. I have found a ship called the True Love or the Ann that arrived in Philadelphia at about the right time period. The majority of people on that ship were young and listed as indentured servants. John's name is listed--Nellie's is not.
In any case, they marry in the Shendoah Valley after completing their indenture. They are believed to have married somewhere around 1775-1776. Their first son was born July 1776. In 1777, John enlisted in the 8th Virginia Regiment of the Continental Army. He was at the Battle of Point Pleasant--possibly out hunting for rations--when the battle took place. He also participated in the battles of Monmouth, NJ and at Stormy Point, NY. He was discharged on Dec. 29, 1779, and was given a land grant of 92 acres on Laurel Creek. The grant was signed by Gov. Monroe on Aug. 14, 1785.
John and his family did not immediately come to the area as he and his son Thomas were with Hugh Caperton in 1793, guarding the Kanawha Valley from Indians. In 1798, he was appointed constable of Montgomery County, Va. He relocated to present day Wyoming County somewhere between 1798 and 1799, bringing four sons with him, making them the first permanent settlers of Wyoming County, WV. After the death of his first wife Nellie in 1812, he married Anne Keatley Hendrix, a widow from Monroe County, on June 19, 1813.
