a. Note:   Orson was the younges child and fifth son. His parents moved to Dixie land when Orson was a small boy and he grew up during very trying times and through much deprivation and suffering. Orson did not marry until he was in his forties. Life was rough and roudy and the environment he saw was that of most mining towns in the west. All of the Rice boys began their independent struggle for a handhold while they were young, on cattle and horse ranches. There was much disunity in the marriage of Orson and Amy, much due to the differences in ages and the fact that Orson would not associate himself with the Mormon church. Orson left his family in later years and went to live in the mountains of Santa Cruz, CA. and became a hermit.
