Notes
a. Note:   Ira, the youngest child in his family, became an orphan early in life. He was enlisted in the War of 1812 when he was 19 years old. His enlistment papers describe him as a farmer, 5 feet 8" tall, light hair, blue eyes and having come from new Ashford, Berkshire County, Mass.
Ira Rice arrived in Utah September 27, 1847 being one of the earliest pioneer companies. Ira first settled in Farmington, but not for long, he then moved to Ogden and then to North Ogden where he became the first Bishop of the Mormon religion. He is given credit for building the first log cabin there. Ira married his 3rd wife, Elizabeth Ann Morris Butler in North Ogden.
He was one of the first to establish a home in Providence early in 1859.
Rice Creek, which is located in North Ogden Canyon, was named after Ira and Asaph Rice.
Ira and Asaph Rice, with a few other families settled at Beaver Dam, now in the state of Arizona. In a journal of William E. Jones, on Dec. 23rd, 1867, flood waters came down the Beaver Dam wash and raised to the top of its banks. The next day the bank where the homes stood began to cave in. The Rices were left homeless.
