Notes
a. Note:   Bill died of Tuberculosis. The story has been told that Bill developed TB while working at the "Old Man" Hank Haas farm from the horses that were sick with the Glanders. Bill exclaimed on Armistice Day when he heard the celebration bells sound, "My freedom bells are ringing too!" The pioneers that settled in Goodhue County Minnesota believed the cold dry air of the climate would prevent "Old World" diseases. And it was promoted as a reason to immigrate here. Tuberculosis, know as Consumption in the 1800's plagued the nation at the turn of the century, and it spread to Goodhue County as Well. Before long, TB was a leading cause of death in Minnesota during the 1910's and 1920's. It was not until the mid-1940's that a patient at Mineral Springs, Goodhue County, Minnesota became the first person in the world cured of tuberculosis.
