a. Note:   Review, April, 25, 1940. Herman Schreyer Herman Schreyer, residing at 111 North Jefferson, died at his home Friday of last week and funeral services were held for him Sunday afternoon at the Friedens church. He was a deaf mute and for that reason was not known personally to the greater number of New Ulm citizens but those who knew him as a neighbor or in his business of shoemaker which he conducted here for many years remember him as an industrious worker, one who filled his place in life to the best of his ability. The deceased was born March 12, 1871, in Cottonwood township, the son of Carl Schreyer. When he was 13 years of age he entered the school for the deaf at Fairbault and remained there for nine years. on his return to New Ulm he entered the employ of Theo. Mueller as a cigar maker and remain in that industry for 21 years. He was married November 24, 1895, to a sister of his employer, Miss Martha Mueller, and the have always made their home in New Ulm since. At the end of his employment as a cigarmaker, he set up a shoe repair shop and continued in that until the time of his death. Mr. Schreyer was the father of five children, four of whom died. The only surviving child is a son George, local manager of the Western Union Office. Two grandchildren, three sisters and two brothers, John and Carl of New Ulm, also survive the deceased. The sisters are Mrs. August Feder of Madelia, Mrs. Gustav Schwanke of St Clair and Mrs. Adolph Falk of New Ulm.
  Shirley (Bird) Bolin was raised by her grandparents Herman and Martha (Mueller) Schreyer after the death of her mother. Shirley remembers that her grandfather Herman could speak one word, "Otto". Otto was the name of his younger brother. The story passed down in the family was that Herman went death as the result of a childhood illness.
