Note: Married: 1814 in , Laurens, South Carolina Children William COWAN b: 1814 in , Laurens, South Carolina Elijah COWAN b: Abt 1820 in , Laurens, South Carolina Nancy E. COWAN b: Abt 1819 in , Laurens, South Carolina Celia COWAN b: 1820 in , , South Carolina Samuel COWAN b: 1827 in , Laurens, South Carolina In the 1830 census, a widow Mary Cowan is living near James Cowan in Greenville Co SC. I have always assumed this was the widow of JOHN Cowan. See the records below: 1830 South Carolina Greenville image 31 of 146 Cowan Mary wid 2 males 10-14, 1 male 20-29; 1 female under 5, 1 female 10-14, 1 female 20-29, 1 female 30-39 Cowen James 1 male under 5, 2 males 5-9, 2 males 10-14, 1 male 15-19, 1 male 40-49, 1 male 60-69; 3 females under 5, 1 female 5-9, 1 female 10-14, 1 female 15-19, 1 female 30-39 (By the way, who is the male 60-69, so born 1770 to 1779, in James Cowan's household?) Now, Mary Paty (Patey, Patty, etc) Cowan, who was the widow of Francis Cowan, remarried to Vincent Thomason and they moved off to Campbell Co GA by the 1850 census, with all of their children listed as born in SC and with the eldest born 1833. I haven't found them in GA in 1840. Sarah Jane Cowan, daughter of Mary Patey and Francis Cowan, married Joel Green Yates in Campbell Co GA 16 Feb 1845. She is the only child of Francis Cowan I can find. I keep seeing a James Jasper Cowan and Charles Melmath Cowan listed, but I have never been able to find any sign of them. I have not been able to find a marriage record or date for Mary Patey Cowan and Vincent Thomason, but if it was after 1830, the widow Mary Cowan in the census is actually Francis Cowan's widow, not John Cowan's widow. Special Orphans Court 22nd February 1840 On the application of Elijah Cowan It is ordered by the Court that Elijah Cowan be appointed administrator of the Estate of John Cowan Decd and that letters issue accordingly It is farther ordered by the Court that John Robison John Collins & Gray Sims be and they are hereby appointed appraisers to appraise the Estate of John Cowan Deceased It is farther ordered by the Court that Elijah Cowan the administrator of the Estate of John Cowan Decd be authorized and required to Sell all the personal property belonging to the state of John Cowan Deceased Special Orphans Court 14th Octo 1841 This day came into Court the administrator of the Estate of John Cowan Decd and declares the Same insolvent. It is therefore ordered that Said Estate be declared insolvent and that Said adms. file his accounts and Vouchers for final settlement It is farther ordered by the Court that the Second Monday in November next be Set apart as a day for final Settlement of Said Estate. It is farther ordered that publication be made in the Jacksonville Republican for thirty days requiring all persons interested in Settlement of Said estate to be and appear at an orphans Court to be held at the Court house at the time above specified and Show Cause if any they have why final Settlement of Said estate should not then be made So who are these Cowans? Is this Elijah Cowan the son of John Cowan and Mary Garrett? If so, then wouldn't one think from the documents that John Cowan did not die in 1828 in South Carolina? He is not in the 1840 census, which was not begun until 1 June 1840. Clearly from the first document this John Cowan died before 22 Feb 1840. So where was our John Cowan, son of David Cowan and Celia Garrison, in the 1830 census? There is a John Cowen in Franklin Co TN in 1830, where Jesse Ginn is also located. Recall that two of Jesse Ginn's daughters married two of John Cowan's sons in 1845 in St. Clair Co, where Jesse Ginn moved about 1836. However, there is a host of Cowan/ Cowen families in Tennessee that don't seem to be related to us, and this John could be one of them.
