a. Note:   Enlistment papers for both state and federal Civil War records state that Jasper Newton Miller was born 1831 in Bloomsburg, Columbia, PA but no record can be found. Family lore has him brought from Lancaster County by his parents and siblings to the "west" in the 1840's. His name first shows up in the 1860 KS Federal Census living in Kaw Township, Jefferson, KS with his wife, Rebecca and daughter, Eliza, age 3, married within the year. They lived on land owned by Rebecca's father, John Brown, and Rebecca is one-half Cherokee. J.N.Miller is buried at Oak Hill Cemetery, Galena, Cherokee, KS beside his son, Norman Ashby Miller. Family stories state he was shot on his way home from town by a neighbor and his horses brought the wagon to the cabin. He is said to have run a river ferry at the time and he was also a carpenter. The ferry he ran is said to be on the Grand River that is in Northeast Oklahoma but no town name is mentioned. This is the story that was handed down from his youngest daughter, Armitta to her daughters. Jasper served in Company H, 11th KS Volunteer Cavalry from 1862 until 1865. He saw action against the Confederates in Arkansas, MO., OK.
