Notes
a. Note:   John shows up first in the 1850 Federal census in Dekalb Co., MO with his family. He moved to Kaw, Jefferson, KS about 1854/5, buying land there. The 1860 Fed. census shows his second wife and other children. About 1869/70, he moved with his family to South Coffeyville area in OK. He was murdered on his way home from Nowata after trying to sign up on the Cherokee indian land rolls. This took place in the early 1870s. Two of his youngest sons, Mark and Hugh later became members on the Nighthawks who were against assimilating with the white government. Hugh was arrested and served five years in the Federal Prison for his actions. The Browns were never able to sign up as Cherokees.
