One of Curly Joes sons who was named Rodrigo Geronimo when he was born in 1868(this in incorrect it was 1867) fished out of Simms Cove in his youth like most of the family Rick as he was known then moved to Port Lincoln where he married Clara Green whose brother Jack also became a well known fisherman. Rick fished from there firstly in the Stranger and then in the 60ft former yacht Janet, which he had bought together with H.E.Varley and converted to a fishing cutter In 1905 Rick Simms sailed her to victory in the fishing cutter race at the Pt.\Lincoln Regatta. The following year Rick bought the Minnie Simms in partnership from his Father and took her to t Pt. \Lincoln He became well known not only for his fishing skills (it was said that he could find fish when no one else could raise a scale) but also as the owner skipper of the legendary boat The Minnie Simms was said to have been the fastest sailing boat known in Gulf waters averaging 10 knots on long passages. Her fastest p[passage from Pt.\Lincoln to Pt. Adelaide was 19 and a half hours all under sail This was a record for some 40 years which no other bettered under\sail Seafaring men of the day said that the Minnie Simms was a marvel at ghosting in light airs. She,d move to the heat of the sun they said. IN 1912 RICK AGAIN SKIPPERED A CUTTER TO VICTORY IN THE PT. LINCOLN Regatta this time it was the Minnie Simms. Rick was at his happiest when he had netted a school of salmon and with the well full and fish boxes stacked on deck up to the rail he was making a fast passage to Port Pirie or to the ferry steps at Pt Adelaide where he could sell cheaply and make a good profit because of the quantity . One time it was blowing so hard that they said prayers for him in Pt Adelaide For almost 30 years he delivered those loads of fish up to 15 tons at a time. Apparently he was quite happy manoeuvring the Minnie Simms up the Pt river under sail for although an auxiliary petrol engine had been fitted in 1913 he had it removed in 1916 after it gave trouble. Once the mast broke while hauling fish and so Rick and his crew sailed to Glenelg with a full load of fish under jury rig. Rick always wore a bowler hat, had saying peculiar to himself, such as It,s a bundle of boards. when he didn't like something and it would roll the sugar out of your tea when describing a certain type of weather. When Rick and Clara had a son they called him Thistle after Thistle Island not a conventional choice of name by any means. Rick would sometimes catch a white pointer shark and exhibit it under canvas at Glenelg on Sth Aust Proclamation Day. He did the same on Pt Lincoln on special occasions. History goes that one time the Minnie Simms came into Pt Lincoln and tied up at the jetty there was a smart Yacht from Adelaide also tied up there and the owner walked down the jetty to where Rick was. He was dressed in white trousers and a blazer with a monogrammed pocket and his captains hat had scrambled eggs on it. He called out to R
