His Daughter from 1st marriage Lillian Ivy Butler (now Fitzgerald born 1902) remembers the day Francie was married. Ivy says she stayed with WILHEMINA at Simms Cove and remembers Curley Joe. According to enclosed copy of marriage certificate France's name was Francesca Simms. According to information written in a book of Connie Warns, her name was Hager Mary Francesca Geraldine, known as France. According to Garth, people called her "Auntie France" not Francie According to one of the Butler relatives, France was sometimes known as Francie but mostly France. As far as we are concerned, she must have had Francesca in her name and you have used Francesca in your history of Geraldine but have spelt it differently Please let me know if you want me to do any further checking of her name Married in home of Mr. L Simms of Brighton Moonta. Would this be Leo and if so can you put in his name Witness W. Simms (no trade) of Glencoe Farm, Moonta. Would this be Wilhelmina and if so can you put in her name Noticed we do not have birth dated for William Rowe Butler HISTORY OF FRANCESCA SIMMS 1872 -1956 (from Helen Rogers) France was born at Moonta in 1872 and grew up with a vast knowledge of boats and fishing so may well have helped her father and brothers with heir work whilst on shore. In 1904 France married William Roe (Will) Butler in the home of Mr. Leo Simms of Brighton Moonta. France had been living with Wilhelmina Simms at Glencoe Farm. Moonta and she and Ximiene were witnesses. Will was born at Burra to Parents James and Margaret Butler. He farmed at Agery and was a widower with seven children although the oldest five had left home to work. France brought up the youngest two children as her own; Ivy 4 years old and Alvin 2 years old. Will and France sold Agery and moved to Greens Plains, Alford, where Wills's father, James. was one of two men to grow the first wheat in the Wallaroo-Moonta district in 1866. In 1909 Will decided there were more opportunities for his younger sons on Eyre Peninsula which was still being developed and had a higher rainfall. He sold out and moved to Stokes on a farm they called "Glengarra". There was plenty of scrub to clear by hand so plenty of hard work ahead for the family. It appears that France stayed at Moonta to await the first of their daughter, Mavis, born in January the following year. To complete the family, Jim was born at Tumby in 1911. Although France was baptised in the Church of England(This is incorrect was baptised on 16 Sept 1872) the family supported and attended the then Methodist church as Will had been brought up in the Wesleyan Methodist Church which became the methodist Church of Australia in 1900. He was a trustee and involved in a cropping programme to raise funds to build a new church at Stokes. Will followed the local football and used his car to help transport the team on an occasional trip away to play in other areas of Eyre Pen. He was a counsellor in the District Council of Tumby Bay, representing Stokes Ward 1911-1921 Of a serious and thoughtful nature. Will was fair minded in all of his business dealings and worked hard. France was a quiet type of person but very kind hearted. In 1929/30 Will and France retired from the farm and moved into Tumby Bay although Will some times went out to help Jim with his Scru
