Note: PARK GENERAL PATH 16 VIEWED MARRIAGE CERT. AT KADINA 19 NOV 1996 MARRIED AT HOME OF JOHN PEARCE HAMLEY HILL MOONTA (WAS THIS HER HOME) I COULD NOT DECHIPER NAMES OF WITNESS BUT NONE WHERE HIS BROTHERS NAMED. TOM BUILT THE HOUSE AT SIMMS COVE IN 1904 THIS WAS SOLD JUNE 1998 FOR $425000 AFTER HAZELS DEATH. SHE HAD BEEN LIVING THERE ON HER OWN FOR MANY YEARS.TOM Tom was born 8 Feb. 1874, the 4th child and second son of Joseph and Blanche. He went to school until he was 9 years old then went fishing. The Simms clan were a very hard working family and when they weren't fishing they were making and mending nets and equipment. We don't know much of Tom, but it seems his whole life was devoted to fishing and fathering a large family. He married Ida May Pearce in 1905 and around this time built a large house at Simms Cove which could have been a show piece in its day. The house still stands, and Hazel (daughter) still lives there but is barely habitable. Over the years the boys of the family were educated to the age of 13 years, then each in turn went to work on the family fishing boats. The girls stayed at home at Simms Cove, Moonta, and were educated for a gentler lifestyle. As time went by, the older boys had their own boats and fished from Pt. Augusta to Ceduna and Kangaroo Island and all waters in between. Finally the main fishing was concentrated in the Franklin Harbour area and around 1936 Tom purchased a block of lad for 10 pound in the township of Cowell and built a large house. The family never lived here however, Ida and the girls Hazel and Mavis stayed in Moonta and the boys, who were mostly established with family ties of their own, were living mainly in the Cowell area. Reg. and his wife Peggy and family finally took up residence in the Cowell house and still live there. As Tom grew older he gave up fishing and during the early years of the war, he lived in Moonta and spent time building dinghes for various members of the family. With little education he was a very clever person in a practical way, and built many seaworthy craft. He later lived with his son Lance and family for some time, then spent his declining years in a small dwelling in Cowell. BOATS Had many boats over the years. Curly Joe built "Minnie Simms" Was built at Pt. Adelaide. Used by family, when Joe died left house and boat to girls, nothing to boys. Boat finally bought by Rick Simms and worked out of Pt. Lincoln. Finally sold and ran aground and wrecked on Wardang Island. Other boats. "Sisters" Brothers" I am sure there were others over the years but these were the one mentioned. If you want to clarify any of this, most of it came from Alick who lived in Cowell.. there is a another brother,Glen, who lives in Pt. Pirie who may be able to help My Mum Shirley Simms could give you addresses and phone numbers if you need them, She lives at Cowell 86292209 Both girls of Toms family are still living, Hazel lives in Moonta and Mavis in Adelaide written by Jill Loudoun
